DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin expressed profound condolences to the grieving parents of P. Ramkumar, the prime accused in the software engineer Swathi murder case, following his shocking custodial death inside the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai. He demanded that the state government immediately institute an independent judicial inquiry headed by a sitting or retired High Court judge to investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
Prison authorities claimed that Ramkumar committed suicide by biting a live electrical wire inside the dispensary block. However, his family, human rights activists, and legal experts raised grave suspicions of foul play, pointing out severe lapses in jail security, the lack of round-the-clock surveillance for a high-profile undertrial, and unexplained inconsistencies in official narratives. Stalin emphasized that a custodial death inside a high-security prison raises serious questions regarding the competence, transparency, and integrity of the state prison administration. He stated that uncovering the unvarnished truth was indispensable to maintaining public faith in the criminal justice system and protecting human rights.
Stalin insisted that only an impartial judicial probe could uncover the facts and ensure accountability for any official negligence.
