DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin reminded the AIADMK state government of its fundamental administrative responsibility to protect Chennai residents from the looming danger of another devastating flood disaster. With the northeast monsoon fast approaching, Stalin warned that administrative complacency and half-hearted pre-monsoon preparedness would expose millions of urban residents to catastrophic inundation similar to the December 2015 deluge.
Stalin pointed out that memory of the horrific 2015 floods, which claimed hundreds of lives, destroyed thousands of homes, and caused unprecedented economic ruin, remained fresh in public consciousness. However, the ruling administration had failed to undertake systematic desilting of major drainage canals, including the Buckingham Canal, Otteri Nullah, Mambalam Canal, and Adyar river basin. Crucial stormwater drain networks linking arterial roads to natural discharge points remained incomplete or clogged with construction debris and garbage. Stalin emphasized that disaster management required proactive engineering solutions and institutional coordination, not last-minute cosmetic patch-ups. He urged city authorities and the public works department to work on a war footing.
Stalin insisted that the state administration take immediate, comprehensive flood mitigation steps to ensure Chennai's citizens remain secure and protected.
