DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to fully utilize the high-level interstate talks convened by the Union Ministry of Water Resources on September 29, pursuant to Supreme Court orders, to firmly secure the state's legitimate Cauvery water share. He emphasized that the administration must present an unassailable factual case to ensure that standing samba crops across the delta region do not wither away.
The Supreme Court had directed the Union Water Resources Minister to facilitate a meeting between the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to resolve the immediate crisis amicably. Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu faced unprecedented agrarian distress due to Karnataka's persistent non-compliance with the tribunal's final award. He stressed that the state delegation must not compromise on statutory rights and should forcefully articulate the critical water deficit in Mettur dam. Stalin insisted that the primary agenda of the meeting must be compelling Karnataka to release water immediately and demanding that the Centre notify and constitute the Cauvery Water Management Board without further delay.
Stalin reiterated that DMK expects the state government to demonstrate resolute firmness during interstate negotiations to protect farmers.
