DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK government for pleading for a two-month extension before the Madras High Court to constitute the statutory State Disaster Management Advisory Committee. He stated that seeking prolonged delays when the northeast monsoon was already imminent exposed the government's shocking lack of preparedness and utter contempt for public safety.
Hearing public interest litigations on flood mitigation following the 2015 deluge, the High Court had repeatedly pulled up the state for failing to constitute advisory panels mandated under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. Stalin pointed out that while expert advice and coordinated planning were urgently required to prevent another inundation of Chennai and suburban localities, the government dragged its feet in court. Stormwater drain interlinking remained incomplete, encroachments on natural waterways like Velachery and Pallikaranai marshlands persisted, and desilting operations existed only on paper. Stalin warned that bureaucratic procrastination would lead to catastrophic consequences if heavy monsoon rains battered urban centers again.
Stalin insisted that the administration immediately establish the expert advisory panel and implement urgent flood prevention works across Tamil Nadu.
