DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin highlighted the staggering destruction caused by the catastrophic 2015 floods and lashed out at the AIADMK administration for lingering apathy and failing to rehabilitate affected citizens. Citing official damage assessments, Stalin pointed out that the floods submerged 82,768 hectares of agricultural farmland, destroyed 4,93,716 hutments, inundated 25,48,152 residential houses, and claimed the lives of 347 people across northern districts.
Stalin criticized the state government for its criminal negligence, noting that nearly a year after the disaster, hundreds of thousands of impacted families had not received adequate compensation or permanent housing rehabilitation. Desilting of major stormwater drains, river basins like the Adyar and Cooum, and Buckingham Canal remained abandoned, leaving Chennai and surrounding districts vulnerable to the approaching northeast monsoon. Stalin condemned the ruling administration for treating the unprecedented catastrophe with bureaucratic indifference and failing to learn lessons from the disaster. He emphasized that thousands of farmers had suffered total loss of standing crops without receiving promised crop insurance or state disaster relief.
Stalin demanded that the state government immediately disburse full compensation and complete flood mitigation works.
