DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin demanded that the Union government immediately withdraw its flawed legal argument in the Supreme Court categorizing the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final award as a mere recommendation. He urged the Centre to abandon this unconstitutional posture and constitute the Cauvery Water Management Board without further delay.
Stalin expressed outrage at the central government's sudden reversal before the apex court, where Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi argued that the court had no jurisdiction to direct the Centre to constitute the board and that the tribunal award had no statutory finality. Stalin pointed out that the 2007 final order of the tribunal had been notified in the central gazette under Section 6 of the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, giving it the full force and binding character of a decree of the Supreme Court. Describing the Centre's submission as a blatant political betrayal motivated by electoral interests in Karnataka, Stalin warned that it stripped Tamil Nadu of its established legal protections.
Stalin affirmed that DMK will fiercely oppose the Union government's legal maneuvers to undermine the final tribunal award.
