DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin observed a massive day-long hunger strike in Thanjavur alongside thousands of delta farmers, agricultural laborers, and party cadres to demand the immediate constitution of the Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB). The non-violent demonstration in the agricultural heartland of Tamil Nadu registered powerful democratic resistance against the Union government's persistent refusal to implement apex court directions.
Addressing the gathering of farmers, Stalin lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government for backtracking in the Supreme Court by claiming that parliament alone had the jurisdiction to create the board. He pointed out that this sudden change of stance was a calculated political move to appease Karnataka ahead of its assembly elections, compromising the livelihood of delta farmers. Stalin emphasized that without the statutory regulatory mechanism of the management board, Karnataka would continue to defy tribunal awards and deny Tamil Nadu its lawful water quota. He assured cultivators that the DMK stood resolutely by their side in this life-and-death struggle for water rights.
Stalin vowed that the DMK will escalate mass protests until the Union government implements the tribunal award in full.
