DMK treasurer and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin welcomed the Supreme Court's interim directive ordering Karnataka to release 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu until further orders, while pointing out that this volume falls drastically short of saving standing samba crops. He stated that while any legal relief from the apex court offered temporary solace, the quantum was inadequate to meet the acute irrigation and drinking water needs of delta districts.
Stalin noted that lakhs of acres of standing crops across Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam required substantial water flows to prevent total crop failure. Karnataka's continued recalcitrance and defiance of interstate tribunal awards had pushed Tamil Nadu farmers into unprecedented economic crisis and psychological distress. Stalin criticized the central government for taking a partisan stand and delaying the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, which are the only permanent institutional solutions to ensure lawful water sharing.
Stalin urged the Union government to immediately establish the Cauvery Management Board to guarantee Tamil Nadu's constitutional water rights and protect delta agricultural livelihoods from irreversible ruin.
