DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on November 2, 2016, that the Tamil Nadu government immediately sanction fair and comprehensive financial compensation to innocent homebuyers and neighboring residents who suffered severe economic devastation due to the catastrophic collapse and subsequent demolition of the eleven-story Moulivakkam residential towers.
Stalin recounted the harrowing tragedy of June 2014, when one of the poorly constructed eleven-story towers collapsed during construction, claiming sixty-one precious lives. The surviving second tower remained structurally compromised and hazardous for over two years, forcing hundreds of neighboring families to live under constant fear of another disaster. Homeowners who invested their lifetime earnings and took crippling bank loans to purchase apartments found themselves financially ruined, receiving zero assistance from private developers or regulatory bodies.
The opposition leader stressed that the state government, whose urban planning authorities granted irregular building clearances, bears inescapable moral and civil responsibility toward the victims. Stalin demanded that the administration establish a dedicated compensation fund, facilitate bank loan waivers for ruined homebuyers, and compensate nearby residents whose properties sustained extensive structural damages during the emergency demolition and controlled implosion operations.
