DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government on November 3, 2016, to exert relentless pressure on the Union government to issue a definitive, permanent order denying environmental clearance and construction permission for Kerala's proposed dam across the Siruvani river.

Stalin pointed out that the Siruvani river is an indispensable lifeline for Coimbatore and surrounding districts, supplying sweet drinking water to hundreds of thousands of residents and sustaining groundwater tables across the Kongu region. Constructing a dam across the Attappady valley would drastically curtail natural river inflows into Tamil Nadu, triggering catastrophic drinking water shortages and devastating agricultural farms downstream. Stalin argued that temporary administrative halts or ambiguous ministerial deferrals by central authorities offered no permanent security to the people of Tamil Nadu.

The opposition leader stressed that interstate water rights guaranteed under existing tribunal awards and riparian agreements cannot be compromised through administrative laxity. Stalin demanded that the state cabinet pursue aggressive diplomatic and legal interventions with New Delhi to secure an unequivocal, irrevocable rejection of Kerala's dam proposal, safeguarding Tamil Nadu's vital water sovereignty and regional agricultural livelihoods forever.
