DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam, who held charge of the Home Department portfolios, on November 5, 2016, to recognize his constitutional duty, eliminate rising public fear, and take stern measures to halt the alarming deterioration of law and order across Tamil Nadu.
Stalin pointed out that the state had witnessed a disturbing surge in violent crimes, including brazen daytime robberies, armed gang assaults, extortion rackets, and gruesome homicides occurring in broad daylight. Citizens, particularly vulnerable senior citizens, working women, and small shopkeepers, lived in continuous apprehension regarding their physical security. Stalin observed that the state police apparatus, which had historically enjoyed a formidable reputation for professional efficiency, was being systematically paralyzed by political interference and administrative drift under the AIADMK administration.
The opposition leader emphasized that safeguarding citizen lives and maintaining public tranquility is the paramount duty of any civilized government. Stalin demanded that Panneerselvam convene an urgent high-level review meeting with top police officials, curb political meddling in law enforcement, intensify neighborhood patrolling, and initiate ruthless action against organized criminal elements to restore public confidence.
