DMK leader M.K. Stalin expressed deep sorrow and outrage on November 6, 2016, following the tragic suicide of three Cauvery delta farmers, lamenting that Thanjavur district, historically celebrated as the fertile granary of Tamil Nadu, was being transformed into a land of despair and farmer suicides under the negligent AIADMK regime.

Stalin pointed out that three hardworking cultivators had succumbed to intense psychological agony after witnessing their carefully cultivated samba crops dry up into cracked mud due to lack of Cauvery water. For generations, the delta had generated bumper agricultural yields, nourishing the entire state through industrious farming traditions. However, the ruling government's failure to secure Tamil Nadu's legal water rights from Karnataka or manage available water storage prudently had reduced prosperous agricultural tracts to arid wastelands.

The opposition leader criticized the state administration for maintaining a deafening silence while agrarian families plunged into bereavement. Stalin affirmed that the DMK stood shoulder to shoulder with delta farmers, calling upon the government to wake from its stupor, dispatch relief commissioners to affected villages, and provide comprehensive loan waivers before more lives were tragically extinguished.
