DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on November 6, 2016, that the Tamil Nadu government immediately sanction twenty-five lakh rupees in financial compensation and provide a permanent public sector job to one eligible family member of every farmer who died by suicide across the state.

Stalin underscored that catastrophic crop failures caused by severe monsoon deficits, combined with the drying up of Cauvery irrigation channels, had pushed rural cultivators into insurmountable financial destitution. Facing aggressive loan recovery agents from cooperative societies and private moneylenders, despairing farmers in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam were taking their own lives in heartbreaking succession. Stalin stressed that mere nominal ex-gratia payments would not suffice to rescue these devastated households whose sole breadwinners had perished.

The opposition leader emphasized that offering substantive financial relief alongside guaranteed government employment was an essential moral and constitutional obligation of the welfare state. Stalin urged the administration to immediately compile an authentic list of deceased farmers through revenue officials, cease all coercive agricultural debt recovery procedures, and declare a state-wide agrarian emergency to safeguard the future of Tamil Nadu's farming families.
