DMK leader M.K. Stalin raised serious concerns on November 10, 2016, regarding looming drinking water shortages across Chennai, warning that before the tears shed by citizens during the previous year's catastrophic man-made floods had dried, administrative apathy threatened to push the metropolis into severe drought.
Stalin highlighted the tragic irony of Chennai's urban water governance under the AIADMK dispensation. In December 2015, reckless reservoir management and delayed water releases from Chembarambakkam caused unprecedented inundation, destroying thousands of homes and paralyzing public infrastructure. Barely eleven months later, despite suffering such devastation, municipal water agencies had failed to desilt feeder channels, restore catchment basins, or store surplus monsoon precipitation, leaving primary reservoirs at historically low levels.
The opposition leader stressed that working-class neighborhoods and suburban residential clusters were already experiencing acute piped water rationing and erratic private tanker deliveries. Stalin urged the state government to shed its complacent posture, formulate comprehensive water conservation plans, desilt traditional temple tanks and water bodies across the metropolitan area, and guarantee equitable, reliable drinking water supply across all wards before the onset of scorching summer heat.
