DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government and Chennai Metrowater authorities on November 10, 2016, to undertake war-footing measures to secure Chennai's mandated quota of Krishna river water and aggressively expedite construction of the Nemmeli seawater desalination plant project.

Stalin pointed out that storage levels across Chennai's primary drinking water reservoirs, including Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Red Hills, and Cholavaram, were plummeting rapidly due to deficient northeast monsoon rainfall. Unless proactive water management steps were implemented immediately, the capital city risked facing an unprecedented drinking water crisis in the approaching summer months. Stalin highlighted that the previous DMK government had established the landmark Nemmeli desalination plant to provide climate-resilient drinking water for southern Chennai, but subsequent expansion phases suffered inexcusable delays under the AIADMK administration.

The opposition leader called upon the state government to dispatch high-level delegations to Andhra Pradesh to ensure regular discharges through the Kandaleru–Poondi canal. Stalin emphasized that ensuring uninterrupted drinking water supply to millions of urban residents is a fundamental governmental responsibility that requires dedicated foresight, strategic engineering planning, adequate budgetary resources, and urgent executive implementation.
