DMK leader M.K. Stalin welcomed the Union government's decision on November 10, 2016, to abandon the contentious coal bed methane extraction project across the fertile Cauvery delta region, attributing this major victory to the relentless protests organized by the DMK alongside agrarian groups and civil society.

Stalin emphasized that the commercial methane project had posed an existential threat to Tamil Nadu's agricultural heartland, risking irreversible destruction of subterranean aquifers, fertile topsoil, and delta ecosystems. The DMK had consistently spearheaded demonstrations, mobilized rural communities, and raised strong objections in the legislature against environmental exploitation. While expressing satisfaction over the cancellation, Stalin insisted that the Union government must immediately fulfill another paramount obligation by constituting the statutory Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee as mandated by the Supreme Court.

The opposition leader stated that safeguarding the agrarian future of Tamil Nadu requires permanent institutional guarantees rather than piecemeal concessions. He urged the state government to shed its passive approach, assert its legitimate federal rights boldly, and compel the Centre to operationalize the Cauvery regulatory boards without further bureaucratic delay or political hesitation.
