DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the AIADMK government on November 11, 2016, to undertake an urgent overhaul of state fiscal management, cautioning the ruling dispensation against pushing Tamil Nadu's developmental trajectory into a bottomless debt abyss following stern rebukes from the Madras High Court.

Stalin pointed out that the High Court had expressed deep astonishment and concern over the state's alarming debt burden, which had crossed hundreds of thousands of crores of rupees due to fiscal mismanagement, wasteful expenditures, and stagnant revenue generation under AIADMK tenure. Essential capital development projects had ground to a halt while borrowing was recklessly used to cover revenue deficits. Stalin emphasized that the judiciary's unprecedented observations highlighted the complete breakdown of financial prudence and administrative governance in Tamil Nadu.

The opposition leader demanded that the state cabinet immediately formulate a transparent white paper detailing total borrowings, repayment schedules, and the true financial health of public sector utilities like TANGEDCO. Stalin warned that continuous economic denial and fiscal irresponsibility would bankrupt state finances and jeopardize vital welfare schemes, calling for immediate institutional corrective measures to restore economic stability and investor confidence.
