DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the AIADMK government on November 12, 2016, to treat the unprecedented currency crisis triggered by demonetisation on par with a major natural calamity, demanding emergency disaster-relief operations across Tamil Nadu to protect vulnerable citizens from severe distress.

Stalin observed that millions of people, including elderly pensioners, hospital patients, informal sector workers, and daily wage earners, were subjected to harrowing ordeals as automated teller machines remained completely inoperative and bank branches exhausted cash supplies within hours. The sudden liquidity drought crippled essential services, leaving households unable to buy food provisions or pay for emergency healthcare. Stalin condemned the state administration for functioning in a state of paralysis while ordinary citizens faced starvation and loss of daily livelihoods.

The opposition leader demanded that district collectors deploy disaster management teams to provide drinking water, shaded seating, and medical assistance outside banks. He also called upon the state government to permit cooperative banks to disburse funds, allow old currency for municipal taxes and utility bills, and establish community feeding centers. Stalin warned that failing to act promptly would turn the financial crisis into an acute humanitarian disaster.
