DMK leader M.K. Stalin criticized the Chief Minister on November 14, 2016, pointing out that an official press release issued in the Chief Minister's name completely failed to offer solace, relief, or administrative direction to millions of citizens struggling across Tamil Nadu under the crushing impact of demonetisation.
Stalin observed that ordinary working people, agricultural laborers, daily-wage earners, and petty merchants were reeling from severe liquidity distress following the abrupt withdrawal of five-hundred and one-thousand rupee currency notes. Despite widespread panic and chaos outside banks and post offices, the state government's communication offered no constructive action plan, emergency funding arrangements, or administrative assistance for queuing citizens. Stalin characterized the statement as perfunctory and detached from the harsh ground realities confronting vulnerable households.
The opposition leader stressed that during such severe socioeconomic dislocation, the public expects responsible leadership and tangible administrative intervention. He urged the state administration to coordinate immediately with the Reserve Bank of India to expedite cash consignments to cooperative institutions and rural branches. Stalin insisted that the government must actively deploy mobile cash dispensers, provide drinking water and medical aid at bank queues, and champion citizen welfare rather than releasing empty bureaucratic platitudes.
