DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued a firm warning on November 14, 2016, stating that the DMK would mobilize a massive statewide agitation if the Union and Tamil Nadu governments failed to take requisite legal steps to permit Jallikattu during the upcoming Pongal festival in January 2017.
Stalin emphasized that the ancient bull-taming tradition holds immense emotional, cultural, and historical significance for the people of Tamil Nadu, particularly the agrarian youth across Madurai, Pudukkottai, Tiruchirappalli, and Alanganallur. He pointed out that consecutive bans had deeply hurt regional sentiments and threatened the very survival of indigenous cattle breeds nurtured over centuries. Stalin criticized both the central and state dispensations for engaging in blame games and hollow assurances rather than introducing concrete legislative safeguards.
The opposition leader asserted that the DMK would not remain a passive onlooker if Tamil identity and traditional rights were systematically trampled. He urged the state administration to coordinate immediately with central authorities to enact an emergency ordinance or pass parliamentary amendments. Stalin declared that should the government fail to act in time, mass civil demonstrations would be launched across Tamil Nadu.
