DMK leader M.K. Stalin criticized the AIADMK government on November 17, 2016, for failing to mount an effective legal defense before the Supreme Court to establish that Jallikattu is an indispensable part of Tamil culture, civilizational heritage, and rural lifestyle.
Stalin observed that during recent judicial hearings, the state government's legal representatives displayed an astonishing lack of preparation and vigor, failing to place convincing anthropological and veterinary evidence before the apex court bench. Rather than demonstrating how indigenous bovine breeds are preserved through traditional rearing practices associated with Jallikattu, the state's legal strategy appeared perfunctory and detached. Stalin asserted that this legal apathy directly compromised the cultural pride and ancestral rights of the Tamil people.
The opposition leader stressed that the ruling party had repeatedly used Jallikattu for political sloganeering while doing nothing substantive in the courtroom or legislature to secure lasting relief. He demanded that the state administration immediately overhaul its legal team, engage eminent constitutional scholars, and present an unassailable evidentiary and historical case before the Supreme Court to vacate the ban before the upcoming Pongal festivities begin.
