DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on November 17, 2016, that both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments take decisive legislative steps during the ongoing parliamentary winter session to ensure the conduct of Jallikattu, the centuries-old traditional bull-taming sport of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin stressed that Jallikattu is not mere entertainment but an intrinsic cultural symbol deeply woven into rural Tamil identity, indigenous cattle preservation, and the agrarian harvest celebration of Pongal. He pointed out that legal ambiguities and central notifications had prevented the sport from being held for two consecutive years, causing deep resentment and emotional anguish among rural youth and cultural enthusiasts. Stalin argued that with the winter session underway in New Delhi, the Centre had an immediate legislative opportunity to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The DMK leader called upon the AIADMK government to exert vigorous pressure on Union ministers and coordinate with all Tamil Nadu parliamentarians to pass the required statutory amendments without delay. Stalin warned that empty political rhetoric would no longer satisfy the people of Tamil Nadu, who demanded guaranteed legal safeguards for their cultural heritage.
