DMK leader M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK administration on November 17, 2016, for failing to provide immediate financial compensation to the bereaved families of nine farmers who died by suicide across Tamil Nadu following catastrophic crop devastation.

Stalin observed that witnessing their standing crops wither under severe drought and depleted groundwater had broken the resolve of delta cultivators who carried crippling debt burdens. Despite tragic reports emerging daily from rural hamlets, the state government refused to acknowledge the gravity of the agrarian breakdown, leaving impoverished families without any administrative relief or humanitarian succor. Stalin criticized the ruling regime for demonstrating shocking insensitivity toward the very agricultural workforce that ensures food security for millions.

The opposition leader demanded that the state cabinet immediately sanction emergency solatium to each bereaved farming household, halt coercive loan recovery proceedings by cooperative and nationalized banks, and declare Tamil Nadu a drought-affected state to seek central assistance. Stalin affirmed that the DMK would continue to champion the rights of agrarian families, warning the administration that ignoring farmer suicides would invite severe democratic retribution from rural voters.
