DMK leader M.K. Stalin voiced grave concern on November 18, 2016, observing that eleven days after the sudden announcement of demonetisation, ordinary citizens, small traders, and daily laborers continued to endure acute financial turmoil across Tamil Nadu due to persistent currency shortages.
Stalin pointed out that despite repeated assurances from Union authorities that normal banking operations would resume quickly, automated teller machines remained shuttered or ran out of banknotes within minutes. Wholesale vegetable mandis, neighborhood retail shops, transport operators, and unorganized manufacturing units witnessed a severe contraction in daily trade, depriving daily-wage workers of livelihood opportunities. Stalin criticized the ruling AIADMK government for acting as a silent spectator while public frustration and economic paralysis mounted steadily across the state.
The opposition leader emphasized that demonetisation had effectively punished honest, hardworking citizens while leaving major financial wrongdoers unaffected. He stressed that working-class families were struggling even to purchase daily provisions and medicines. Stalin urged both the Union and state governments to dispense with defensive rhetoric, inject adequate smaller denomination currency into circulation, and adopt pragmatic relief mechanisms to revive local economic life.
