Conduct voting in both Houses of #Parliament to extend the set date to 31.03.2017 for exchanging the old currency notes #Demonetisation

Editorial context

DMK leader M.K. Stalin called upon the Union government on November 24, 2016, to conduct a formal vote in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to extend the deadline for exchanging demonetised currency notes until March 31, 2017.

Stalin emphasized that the abrupt cancellation of legal tender status for existing five-hundred and one-thousand rupee notes had inflicted unprecedented misery on millions of ordinary citizens, daily wage earners, farmers, and petty merchants across India. Banking infrastructure and automated teller networks were entirely unequipped to manage the sudden volume of transactions, creating prolonged bottlenecks that paralyzed local commerce and daily subsistence. Stalin argued that testing the controversial policy measure through a parliamentary vote would compel elected representatives to acknowledge the real hardships endured by their constituents.

The DMK leader asserted that democratic governance demands direct accountability to Parliament rather than unilateral executive decrees that cause widespread economic turmoil. He noted that extending the exchange window until the end of the financial year would provide necessary breathing room for rural communities lacking digital payment infrastructure, preventing unnecessary bankruptcies and restoring basic economic stability.
