DMK leader M.K. Stalin called upon the AIADMK government on November 24, 2016, to immediately establish an independent Lokayukta ombudsman in Tamil Nadu, urging the administration not to dismiss the sharp observations made by the Supreme Court regarding the creation of statutory anti-corruption bodies.
Stalin highlighted that the apex court had questioned the Union and state governments over prolonged delays in appointing a Lokpal and enacting Lokayukta legislation across various states. While several other Indian states had already instituted functional anti-corruption mechanisms, Tamil Nadu's ruling party continued to evade legislative action to avoid institutional scrutiny over administrative graft. Stalin pointed out that establishing a statutory, autonomous body was indispensable for holding ministers and top bureaucrats accountable to the public.
The opposition leader stressed that clean governance and public transparency could not exist without independent oversight institutions empowered to investigate corruption allegations impartially. He condemned the AIADMK regime for deliberately stalling the reform to shield corrupt practices within executive departments. Stalin demanded that the government introduce a robust Lokayukta bill during the forthcoming assembly session to restore public trust in the rule of law.
