DMK leader M.K. Stalin announced the successful execution of a massive statewide human chain demonstration on November 24, 2016, protesting the severe economic hardships and currency shortages unleashed by the Union government's demonetisation exercise. Tens of thousands of DMK cadres, civil society representatives, trade union members, and affected citizens joined hands across all districts of Tamil Nadu, forming continuous human chains along major municipal thoroughfares.
Leading the demonstration in Chennai, Stalin highlighted that the unthoughtful invalidation of eighty-six percent of circulating cash had devastated small businesses, daily-wage laborers, farmers, and middle-class households. He emphasized that sixteen days after the announcement, banks and automated teller machines remained completely dry, forcing citizens to lose precious workdays standing in endless queues. Stalin noted that the demonstration gave voice to widespread public anger against central mismanagement and state government silence.
The opposition leader commended party workers and citizens for maintaining peaceful discipline while registering a powerful democratic resistance against administrative injustice. Stalin affirmed that the DMK would continue to mobilize democratic actions until the Union government resolved the liquidity crisis and extended practical relief measures to protect ordinary people from systemic financial disruption.
