DMK leader M.K. Stalin criticized the Chief Minister on November 24, 2016, for displaying callous indifference toward citizens suffering under demonetisation while claiming that the people stood entirely with the ruling dispensation. Stalin noted that while the state leadership made self-congratulatory claims, ordinary men and women spent entire days standing in exhausting queues outside bank branches and malfunctioning cash dispensers across Tamil Nadu.
The sudden invalidation of five-hundred and one-thousand rupee banknotes disrupted the lives of daily wage earners, small vendors, senior citizens, and homemakers who struggled for basic subsistence. Stalin pointed out that essential economic activities had ground to a halt, with hospitals turning away patients unable to produce accepted currency notes and local markets witnessing plummeting sales. Despite this immense distress, the state government failed to introduce support mechanisms or challenge the Centre's chaotic implementation.
Stalin asserted that genuine leadership requires acknowledging popular hardship and intervening to protect vulnerable citizens. He urged the Chief Minister to move beyond hollow slogans, deploy administrative machinery to assist queuing citizens, and demand necessary currency allocations from the Union government to stabilize the state economy.
