DMK leader M.K. Stalin toured the Cauvery delta districts on November 25, 2016, to personally visit the grieving families of ten farmers who died by suicide following widespread crop failure. Meeting the bereaved kin in their village homes across the agricultural heartland, Stalin expressed deep solidarity, shared their immense sorrow, and distributed direct financial assistance on behalf of the party to alleviate their immediate distress.
The delta region faced an unprecedented agrarian crisis as the failure of the northeast monsoon, coupled with Karnataka's refusal to release Tamil Nadu's mandated share of Cauvery water, resulted in extensive parching of standing samba crops. During his interactions, family members recounted how unmanageable agricultural borrowings and crop desiccation drove household breadwinners to despair. Stalin listened attentively to their harrowing testimonies, assuring them that their sacrifices would not be forgotten by the people.
Condemning the state administration for failing to provide timely relief or even acknowledge the scale of farmer deaths, Stalin affirmed that the DMK would stand steadfastly with the agrarian community. He urged the government to distribute emergency compensation to all affected families and initiate comprehensive statewide drought mitigation without delay.
