DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on November 25, 2016, that the AIADMK administration immediately sanction comprehensive financial compensation to the bereaved families of farmers who died by suicide across the Cauvery delta region. Stalin insisted that the state government must shed its indifference and take proactive measures to safeguard agrarian livelihoods before more lives were lost.

Visiting drought-hit rural belts, Stalin witnessed firsthand the profound despair gripping agriculturists whose standing samba paddy crops had withered entirely due to lack of Cauvery water and deficient monsoon rainfall. He observed that mounting debts from cooperative institutions and private lenders, combined with total crop destruction, pushed vulnerable cultivators into fatal distress. Stalin criticized the ruling regime for failing to declare Tamil Nadu drought-hit or disburse immediate relief packages.

The opposition leader emphasized that the government holds a constitutional obligation to protect the farming community that feeds the state. Stalin called for an immediate moratorium on agricultural loan recoveries, waiving farm credits, and sanctioning adequate per-acre compensation for damaged fields. He warned that continued apathy from the state administration would worsen the rural humanitarian catastrophe.
