Editorial context

DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments on November 26, 2016, to take swift administrative measures ensuring that government and private sector employees receive their monthly salaries in physical cash until the acute currency shortage caused by demonetisation subsided.

With the end of the month approaching, Stalin pointed out that millions of salaried workers, daily-wage laborers, and informal sector employees faced immense anxiety over accessing their legitimate earnings. The sudden invalidation of high-denomination notes, coupled with severe rationing at bank branches and dry automated teller machines across Tamil Nadu, paralyzed daily financial transactions. Stalin emphasized that forcing salaried workers to stand in long queues during working hours compromised productivity and created severe domestic stress.

The opposition leader stressed that working-class families rely on immediate cash to purchase essential groceries, pay school fees, settle house rent, and meet urgent healthcare expenditures. He cautioned that failure to disburse wages in tangible currency would bring households to a standstill. Stalin demanded that employers coordinate with banking authorities to distribute salaries directly, protecting vulnerable families from systemic administrative breakdown.
