DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on November 26, 2016, that the Tamil Nadu government immediately fulfill all legitimate demands raised by agitating farmers across the state. Stalin insisted that the state administration formally declare Tamil Nadu as a drought-affected state, provide comprehensive financial relief packages, and expedite immediate disbursement of crop insurance claims to protect farming families from economic ruined.

Stalin highlighted that consecutive failure of the southwest and northeast monsoons had resulted in historic water deficits, drying up irrigation tanks and causing widespread withering of standing samba crops. Farmers in the Cauvery delta and southern districts were experiencing heart-wrenching distress, with multiple farmer deaths and suicides reported due to debt burdens and crop failures. Stalin criticized the AIADMK government for turning a blind eye to rural misery and delaying the mandatory drought assessment needed to release emergency funds.

The opposition leader stressed that agriculture was the backbone of Tamil Nadu's social fabric and economic stability. Stalin urged the Chief Minister to convene an urgent cabinet meeting to sanction per-acre compensation, waive cooperative farm loans, and disburse pending insurance compensations without bureaucratic hurdles. He reiterated the DMK's total solidarity with the farming community.
