DMK leader M.K. Stalin led a massive demonstration in Chennai on November 28, 2016, joining thousands of party cadres, traders, and citizens to protest against the disastrous implementation of demonetisation by the Union Government. Stalin marched alongside agitating citizens and courted arrest, asserting that the DMK would vigorously resist policies that inflicted cruel economic misery and daily harassment upon the common public.
Stalin condemned the central government for executing an ill-conceived currency recall without preparatory planning or adequate replacement currency. He pointed out that ordinary citizens had been forced to stand in serpentine bank queues for nearly three weeks, leading to lost daily wages, acute hunger, and scores of tragic deaths across the country. Small retail businesses, wholesale vegetable markets, and micro-enterprises were closing down due to complete liquidity drying up across urban and rural markets.
The opposition leader declared that courting arrest was a democratic duty to voice the anguish of millions of silenced citizens. Stalin demanded that the Union Government take emergency steps to restore currency liquidity and compensate families who suffered bereavement or economic collapse. He affirmed that the DMK would continue to mobilize public resistance against authoritarian economic experiments.
