DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued a scathing condemnation of the Union Government's demonetisation exercise on November 28, 2016, describing the acute currency shortage as an undeclared economic war waged by the BJP dispensation against eighty-five crore citizens living in rural India. Stalin highlighted that the sudden withdrawal of high-value banknotes had completely paralyzed the rural agrarian economy and informal trade networks.
Stalin pointed out that rural families, daily-wage laborers, farmers, and petty merchants operated almost entirely on cash, with minimal access to digital banking or functional automated teller machines. While ruling politicians claimed the policy targeted black money, the harsh reality was that ordinary villagers walked miles and waited for hours outside empty bank branches simply to withdraw their own hard-earned savings. Stalin underscored that farming operations had ground to a halt during the crucial sowing season because cultivators could not buy seeds, fertilizers, or pay agricultural labor.
The opposition leader demanded that the central government immediately inject sufficient new currency into rural cooperative societies and regional rural banks. Stalin insisted that the Prime Minister acknowledge the immense economic disruption caused by the decision and announce comprehensive financial support measures for vulnerable rural households.
