Editorial context

DMK leader M.K. Stalin raised serious questions on November 29, 2016, regarding the unusually steep tariff structure imposed on commuters using Chennai Metro Rail. Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu government clarify whether metro fares were deliberately set at exorbitant rates to keep daily patronage artificially low, thereby creating an excuse to hand over operations to private corporations.

Stalin pointed out that Chennai Metro fares were substantially higher than ticket prices charged across comparable metro networks in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. Instead of functioning as an affordable mass rapid transit utility accessible to working-class commuters and students, the metro remained largely out of reach for average citizens. Stalin recalled that the project was envisioned and executed under the DMK regime as a public service to ease urban traffic congestion and reduce vehicular pollution, not as a commercial profit-making venture.

The opposition leader urged the state administration to immediately restructure the fare matrix and introduce affordable monthly transit passes. Stalin affirmed that public transportation should prioritize commuter welfare and decongest city roads rather than chasing corporate balance sheets, demanding transparent administrative accountability regarding metro revenue policies.
