DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged Union Minister of State Pon Radhakrishnan on November 30, 2016, to actively lobby Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the central government's proposal to privatize the Salem Steel Plant. Stalin stated that preserving the prestigious public sector enterprise was a matter of state industrial pride and worker welfare, requiring unified advocacy from all elected representatives from Tamil Nadu.
Stalin recalled that the Salem Steel Plant was established through historic struggles led by Dravidian stalwarts, notably Arignar Anna and Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, to anchor heavy industrial development in western Tamil Nadu. Over the decades, thousands of local farmers surrendered fertile agricultural lands for the plant's development, expecting enduring public sector employment and regional prosperity. Privatizing such a strategically vital public asset and handing it over to private corporate interests would betray those sacrifices and jeopardize thousands of industrial jobs.
The opposition leader called upon Pon Radhakrishnan to represent the sentiments of Tamil Nadu's industrial workforce within the Union Cabinet. Stalin stressed that the central government should focus on modernizing the plant, upgrading its technology, and providing financial turnaround packages rather than selling valuable public assets. He affirmed the DMK's total solidarity with agitating steel plant workers.
