Editorial context

DMK leader M.K. Stalin challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4, 2016, stating that if the Union Government was genuinely committed to eradicating corruption, it must take immediate and stringent punitive action based on evidence uncovered during tax raids on Tamil Nadu cabinet ministers. Stalin pointed out that multiple Income Tax searches conducted at premises linked to ruling AIADMK ministers had surfaced extensive documentation detailing unaccounted assets and financial irregularities.

Stalin observed that public confidence in central investigative bodies would be shattered if raids were merely used as tools for political negotiation rather than impartial law enforcement. Despite repeated raids and seizures, no formal charges or arrests were initiated against powerful political figures, creating a widespread perception that the Centre was shielding corrupt leaders in exchange for political support. Stalin emphasized that selective anti-corruption drives eroded the moral credibility of constitutional governance.

The opposition leader demanded that investigative agencies make their raid findings public and file chargesheets before special anti-corruption courts without external interference. Stalin affirmed that the DMK would continue to fight against institutional corruption and political opacity in Tamil Nadu. He called upon the judiciary to monitor investigations to guarantee impartial accountability for public funds.
