DMK leader M.K. Stalin observed on December 9, 2016, that the Supreme Court's interim directive ordering Karnataka to release two thousand cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu offered modest relief to distressed farmers. Stalin noted that while this interim volume provided temporary breathing room, it fell far short of meeting the massive irrigation and drinking water deficits facing the Cauvery delta.

Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu was experiencing acute drought conditions due to severe monsoon shortfalls and depleted storage across major reservoirs including Mettur Dam. Without adequate river inflows, standing samba crops were withering rapidly across thousands of acres in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts. Stalin argued that interim quotas could not substitute for a permanent, legally binding regulatory mechanism, pointing out that upper riparian authorities frequently ignored court directions during critical summer months.

The opposition leader called upon the state government to ensure that released waters were monitored and transmitted efficiently to the tail-end areas of the delta canal network. Stalin reiterated that permanent salvation for Tamil Nadu agriculture lay in the immediate establishment of the Cauvery Management Board. He urged authorities to vigorously pursue the final adjudication of the river dispute.
