DMK leader M.K. Stalin called upon Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on December 9, 2016, to maintain unrelenting political and legal pressure upon the Union Government to constitute the Cauvery Management Board. Stalin emphasized that securing Tamil Nadu's rightful share of river water was non-negotiable for the survival of the state's agriculture and drinking water security.
Stalin pointed out that despite repeated judicial clarifications affirming the necessity of statutory management machinery, the central administration continued to hesitate due to political calculations in upper riparian Karnataka. This continued delay had deprived delta farmers of timely irrigation, pushing the agrarian belt into severe crop distress and rural debt. Stalin warned that passive administrative correspondence from Chennai would never yield results, urging the Chief Minister to lead an all-party delegation to New Delhi.
The opposition leader stressed that water rights constituted the lifeline of Tamil Nadu's federal existence. Stalin affirmed that all democratic forces in the state stood united on the Cauvery issue, ready to support firm executive actions taken to defend farmers. He called upon Panneerselvam to pursue contempt proceedings before the Supreme Court and ensure that statutory water release mechanisms were permanently established without dilution.
