DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government on December 10, 2016, to execute the long-pending Maduravoyal-Chennai Port elevated expressway project on a war footing. Emphasizing that modern transport infrastructure was the cornerstone of economic prosperity, Stalin stated that completing this vital nineteen-kilometer corridor was indispensable for accelerating industrial growth and export logistics across northern Tamil Nadu.
Stalin recalled that the visionary project was formulated and commenced during the DMK administration under Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi to provide seamless freight connectivity from manufacturing zones to Chennai Port. However, the subsequent AIADMK government halted construction arbitrarily on frivolous environmental pretexts, leading to prolonged litigation, severe cost escalations, and commercial stagnation at the port. Stalin pointed out that heavy container trucks were forced to crawl through choked city arterial roads, causing immense traffic congestion and air pollution.
The opposition leader stressed that narrow political hostility had cost the state billions in lost investments and diverted container traffic to private ports in neighbouring states. Stalin called upon the state administration to coordinate effectively with the National Highways Authority of India and Chennai Port Trust. He demanded immediate resumption of civil works to revive industrial momentum and ease urban transit.
