DMK leader M.K. Stalin expressed profound anguish on December 10, 2016, over the brutal murder of a young woman named Sonia in Perungalathur on the southern outskirts of Chennai. Condemning the heinous crime, Stalin stated that the brazen daylight attack was yet another alarming proof that women's safety had become entirely compromised under the AIADMK administration.
Stalin highlighted that consecutive incidents of violent stalking and murders of young working women in suburban railway stations and residential roads had triggered deep fear among citizens. Despite repeated warnings from opposition leaders and civil society organizations, the police department had failed to strengthen night patrols, monitor habitual stalkers, or secure transit corridors used by women commuters. Stalin pointed out that executive apathy and political interference in police administration had severely eroded basic law and order across the state.
The opposition leader offered heartfelt condolences to the victim's grieving family, demanding swift apprehension and exemplary punishment for the perpetrator through a fast-track judicial process. Stalin urged the Chief Minister to abandon passive administrative rhetoric and institute visible security protocols. He affirmed that the DMK would persistently fight to hold authorities accountable for defending women's fundamental right to safety.
