DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on December 10, 2016, that the Tamil Nadu government constitute a high-level judicial commission headed by a retired High Court judge to recommend preventive measures to protect women from violent crime. Stalin emphasized that urgent institutional reforms were necessary to prevent recurring homicides and harassment that threatened the safety of women across public spaces.
Stalin observed that horrific assaults in broad daylight revealed a severe breakdown of law enforcement, intelligence gathering, and neighborhood policing across urban and rural centers. Women working in industrial hubs, educational campuses, and commercial establishments felt unsafe due to inadequate CCTV surveillance, dark transit corridors, and sluggish police responses to stalker complaints. Stalin stressed that mere reactive investigations after tragedies occurred could not restore public trust in the state's criminal justice machinery.
The opposition leader called upon the ruling administration to implement rigorous preventive policing protocols without delay. Stalin insisted that the proposed judicial commission should evaluate systemic police shortcomings, recommend modern surveillance upgrades, and propose swift legal mechanisms to punish offenders. He affirmed that ensuring fearless living and working conditions for women remained an indispensable priority of civilized governance in Tamil Nadu.
