DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on December 13, 2016, that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam immediately travel to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Stalin stated that the Chief Minister must forcefully present Tamil Nadu's devastation caused by Cyclone Vardah and secure an immediate interim disaster relief allocation of ten thousand crore rupees from the National Disaster Response Fund.

Stalin pointed out that the cyclone had shattered northern Tamil Nadu's coastal infrastructure, collapsing power distribution networks, damaging industrial clusters, and wiping out agricultural plantations across thousands of hectares. Rebuilding the devastated electrical transmission lines, restoring municipal infrastructure, and compensating small traders and fishermen required massive financial resources far exceeding regular state budgetary allocations. Stalin stressed that securing adequate central funding was an urgent necessity to prevent an economic standstill.

The opposition leader criticized the state government for confining its response to administrative letters. Stalin argued that effective governance demanded personal advocacy at the highest executive levels in New Delhi. He called upon the Chief Minister to act without hesitation, ensure swift release of disaster funds, and protect the state's economic stability during this unprecedented natural crisis.
