DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on December 14, 2016, to travel to New Delhi to press the state's urgent relief requirements directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Emphasizing that mere formal correspondence from Chennai was grossly inadequate during a catastrophic calamity, Stalin insisted that personal executive advocacy was necessary to secure substantial disaster relief funds and expedite the deployment of central damage assessment teams.
Stalin observed that Cyclone Vardah had inflicted massive structural damage upon public infrastructure, electrical grids, transport corridors, and private livelihoods across northern Tamil Nadu. While neighbouring states proactively engaged national leaders in person during crises to secure interim assistance, Tamil Nadu's administrative leadership remained passive. Stalin highlighted that the state urgently required thousands of crores for infrastructure rebuilding, agricultural compensation, and coastal restoration.
The opposition leader stated that the Chief Minister must demonstrate firm leadership and represent Tamil Nadu's distress forcefully before the Union Government. Stalin urged Panneerselvam to submit a comprehensive damage memorandum and ensure that central disaster management officials were dispatched immediately. He affirmed that the DMK would support all constructive efforts aimed at securing equitable disaster assistance for the state.
