DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded comprehensive economic relief on December 14, 2016, for farmers whose livelihoods were devastated by Cyclone Vardah. Stalin insisted that the state administration immediately disburse adequate crop loss compensation and announce a complete waiver of agricultural loans disbursed through cooperative societies and nationalized commercial banks across affected districts.
Stalin noted that the ferocious cyclone had destroyed thousands of acres of horticultural orchards, vegetable plantations, paddy nurseries, and flower farms in Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts. Having already endured severe monsoon deficits and drought stress, the farming community was completely crippled by physical infrastructure losses, damaged tubewells, and destroyed farm machinery. Stalin stressed that asking distressed cultivators to service bank loans amidst total harvest destruction was inhumane and financially ruinous.
The opposition leader called upon Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam to approach the Union Government and Reserve Bank of India to secure loan restructuring and relief packages. Stalin asserted that supporting food producers during times of natural catastrophe was an inescapable moral obligation of the state government. He urged the administration to release immediate per-acre cash grants to enable farmers to clear debris and resume agricultural operations.
