DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government on December 15, 2016, to take proactive executive measures to support farmers devastated by Cyclone Vardah. Rather than passively waiting for central assessment teams to visit, Stalin demanded that the state administration immediately constitute a dedicated committee of senior Indian Administrative Service officers to assess agricultural damage and disburse interim compensation.
Stalin highlighted that the severe storm caused widespread devastation across Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur districts, uprooting horticultural crops, flattening standing paddy fields, and destroying banana and sugarcane plantations. With farming families facing total crop destruction and severe livelihood distress, procedural delays in damage enumeration would push vulnerable cultivators into insolvency. Stalin stressed that the state possessed sufficient emergency contingency funds to initiate immediate relief operations while pursuing formal claims with the Union Government.
The opposition leader emphasized that responsive disaster management required compassion and administrative agility. Stalin called upon the Chief Minister to instruct district collectors to conduct prompt field inspections and credit compensation directly into farmers' bank accounts. He affirmed that the DMK stood firmly with the rural community, demanding comprehensive debt restructuring and replantation assistance.
