DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on December 20, 2016, to take decisive steps to enforce legitimate water rights in the Cauvery basin. Stalin demanded that the state leadership relentlessly pressure the Union Government to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and the Regulation Committee without further delay, while simultaneously petitioning the Supreme Court.
Stalin emphasized that the failure to establish statutory regulatory boards left Tamil Nadu farmers entirely vulnerable to the discretionary decisions of the upper riparian state. With agricultural districts experiencing severe drought, the immediate release of mandated water quotas was a question of economic survival for farming families. Stalin warned that relying on routine correspondence was insufficient against central reluctance to implement the final orders of the tribunal.
The opposition leader stressed that the state government must vigorously pursue contempt proceedings and emergency hearings before the apex court. Stalin affirmed that institutional mechanisms established by law must not be diluted for political expediency in neighboring states. He called upon the Chief Minister to demonstrate firm leadership, uphold state interests, and secure water rights awarded through prolonged legal struggles.
