DMK leader M.K. Stalin announced on December 20, 2016, that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam would organize a massive demonstration at the historic arena of Alanganallur on January 3, 2017. The agitation was planned to demand that both the Union Government and the Tamil Nadu administration enact urgent legal measures to facilitate the conduct of Jallikattu during the upcoming Pongal festival.
Stalin pointed out that repeated administrative delays and evasive assurances from ruling authorities had jeopardized the ancient rural tradition. Despite mounting public appeals from village elders, cattle rearers, and sports enthusiasts, the state executive had failed to pursue decisive legislative remedies or introduce a special state ordinance. Stalin affirmed that holding the protest at Alanganallur, the global focal point of bull-taming, would channel widespread public anger into a focused political demand.
The opposition leader asserted that the DMK remained unyielding in safeguarding Tamil pride and the indigenous livestock ecosystem. Stalin warned that further procrastination by authorities would provoke unrest among rural youth who had safeguarded the sporting tradition for centuries. He called upon party functionaries and the agrarian public to mobilize resolutely, demanding that central and state leadership clear every administrative hurdle before harvest festivities commenced.
