DMK leader M.K. Stalin petitioned Governor-Chancellor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao on December 22, 2016, requesting immediate disciplinary action against vice-chancellors of ten state universities who made an unauthorized political visit to V.K. Sasikala. In his official communication, Stalin highlighted that academic heads of premier state institutions breached university service regulations by offering personal allegiances to an unelected private citizen.
Stalin reminded the Governor that university vice-chancellors functioned under statutory authority, funded by taxpayers to impart quality higher education and nurture young minds. By assembling collectively at Poes Garden for partisan objectives, these academic heads compromised the political neutrality essential to university governance. Stalin warned that tolerating such gross misconduct set a dangerous precedent, opening state university campuses to external interference and administrative corruption.
The opposition leader urged the Governor, as the statutory Chancellor of state universities, to invoke constitutional powers and initiate formal inquiries against each implicated vice-chancellor. Stalin affirmed that decisive intervention was imperative to defend academic autonomy, preserve research excellence, and restore public dignity to Tamil Nadu's higher education system. He reiterated the DMK's steadfast commitment to shielding educational institutions from political manipulation.
