DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal to the AIADMK administration on December 23, 2016, demanding comprehensive financial compensation for drought-affected farmers and immediate ex-gratia relief for the families of cultivators who died of suicide or shock. Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu was facing its most catastrophic agrarian calamity in decades, with failure of both monsoons completely devastating standing samba paddy crops.

Stalin pointed out that despite scores of tragic deaths occurring across the Cauvery delta and southern districts, the state administration had demonstrated shocking indifference, refusing to acknowledge agrarian suicides or disburse emergency relief. Cultivators who invested their life savings and incurred substantial loans were pushed to total despair as crops withered in dry fields. He emphasized that the government was constitutionally and morally obligated to protect food producers during catastrophic natural calamities.

The opposition leader demanded that the state announce a minimum compensation of Rs 25,000 per acre for damaged paddy crops and grant Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia assistance to bereaved farmer families. Stalin stressed that immediate loan waivers and emergency relief were imperative to prevent further tragic loss of lives across the farming heartland.
